Motif combines its own editorial recommendation catalogue with optional title metadata, artwork, and recommendation candidates from TMDB. The two layers have different jobs, and this page explains where each comes from.

The Movie Database

When the online catalogue is configured, Motif uses the TMDB API to find movies and television series, display available metadata and posters, and open a wider candidate pool related to your reference titles. Motif applies its own taste profile, filters, repeat controls, and final ranking; TMDB does not supply Motif's editorial taste profiles or final recommendation order.

This product uses the TMDB API but is not endorsed or certified by TMDB.

Motif's taste data

The detailed signals used to rank recommendations—such as atmosphere, pacing, character focus, visual style, intensity, and novelty—are part of Motif's curated prototype catalogue. A title found only through TMDB receives a clearly labelled basic profile until it is independently enriched.

What leaves your browser

Your chosen direction, free-text taste notes, result feedback, saves, dismissals, seen list, and recent recommendation history remain in this browser's local storage. When online search is enabled, the title text you search and the TMDB IDs of reference titles pass through Motif's same-origin Cloudflare Pages Function to TMDB. Poster files load directly from TMDB's image service. Motif does not currently provide user accounts or cross-device profiles.
